The choreographer’s role is to create a dance work based on an idea or concept. This is expressed via the dancer’s movements and through the incorporation of additional performance components such as set, lighting, costumes, music and the performance space. Many choreographic tools are drawn upon when devising movement, ranging from free-form improvisation to the setting of strict parameters or guidelines from which dance sequences will emerge. Choreographers often seek to push boundaries and ‘invent’ or ‘re-invent’ current dance styles with the aim of creating innovative performances.
